Cygnus alarm system protects next phase of UK’s largest power station

Bull Products, a manufacturer of life-saving fire protection equipment, has been contracted to supply an additional 10 of its renowned wireless alarm systems to the next phase of the UK’s largest power station, Hinkley Point.

The nuclear power station in Somerset, worth £18 billion, will involve more than 5,000 site workers at peak periods and the development of two nuclear reactors, which will supply seven per cent of the country’s electricity consumption. It will also provide power for more than six million homes.

Working alongside Bylor (joint venture of Balfour Beatty and Laing O’Rourke), Hinkley Point specifically required an alarm system that would have a powerful radio frequency strong enough to work through underground tunnels – the Cygnus Wireless Alarm System was able to meet this need due to its signal strength and connectivity. Bull has also supplied its fire and first aid first responder trolleys which provide practical mobile safety solutions for workers on site.

A major innovation in wireless emergency fire, first aid and intruder alarms for construction sites and permanent work environments, the Cygnus alarm is the most successful and adaptable system on the market.

To meet customer and market demand, the Cygnus class 1 radio alarm system has been undergoing some upgrades and modifications which now include added functionality, improved battery life, better configuration software and a combined smoke and heat detector.
Bradley Markham, Director at Bull Products, says: “Our continued involvement during the development of Hinkley Point is testament to the strength and innovation of our Cygnus alarm system. The strong wireless mesh means that the site has a dependable alarm system that works in an environment which isn’t best suited to radio.”
