Primed for Success

It is now half a century since concrete pumps came into regular use in the UK construction industry. For most of that period the need and method of priming concrete pumps remained unchanged.

The traditional method using cement primers involved inherent manual handling, health and environmental risks. Changing environmental attitudes and a more proactive approach to health and safety in the concrete industry prompted Lansdowne Products to produce a new user and environmentally friendly solution to priming concrete pumps.

After extensive research and development, Prime-a-Pump was brought to the market 10 years ago in 2001. Several companies had previously tried to produce an alternative to cement primers with very limited success. As a consequence Prime-a-Pump was initially faced with an uphill battle to overcome the negative publicity of the previous products. However, the benefits of this easy-to-use, cost efficient and environmentally friendly product, which really worked, became apparent to the pump operators and won over the dissenters. With the help of our Distributor, Premier Pipeline, and some enlightened individuals, Prime-a-Pump cut its teeth in the difficult CFA piling sector but has since gone from strength to strength throughout the concrete pumping industry, not just in the UK but throughout Europe, the Middle East and Australasia.

The company’s founders have over 30 years experience in the chemical and construction industry throughout the world with a particular interest in the environment and are committed to providing quality products that are both user and environmentally friendly. In the past ‘green’ products have always been saddled with a reputation of not being as effective as their traditional alternatives. Ian Ross, managing director of Lansdowne Products, is adamant that this does not have to be the case.

Building on the success of Prime-a-Pump and very much in response to customer requirements, they have developed a new range based on the same approach, using innovative technology to produce user and environmentally friendly products.

Once again changing attitudes to traditional methods and products have driven the development of this range.

The use of traditional acid cleaners is increasingly becoming frowned upon in many areas, which has resulted in Lansdowne introducing their Lancon concrete remover and cleaner. This is a non-fuming biodegradable product formulated with sustainable ingredients.

Tarcoat is a water-based, biodegradable release agent used to reduce the adhesion of bituminous mixtures to the walls and beds of lorries and plant. It can also be readily used to coat equipment, shovels, and other tools to aid in performance, maintenance and cleaning.

Plantcoat is an environmentally friendly low VOC product that provides a clear adhesion resistant coating for concrete formwork, plant and tools. Once treated, concrete forms may be reused repeatedly before reapplication of the coating is necessary. Coating plant, tools and mixing equipment resists concrete adhesion and makes them easy to clean.

Finally, an innovative product of increasing importance to the plant and construction sector is Seal-a-Tyre. Seal-a-Tyre incorporates the latest puncture prevention technology to protect the tyres of even the largest of plant and heavy duty vehicles. Seal-a-Tyre will remain fluid within the tyre for many years, affecting a repair on the punctured tyre instantaneously. The cost of the downtime and disruption experienced by just one puncture in the tyre of plant or heavy vehicles easily justifies the small cost of Seal-a-Tyre protection.
