More Than Just a Steel Fabricator

Despite the current recession, there are still many steel fabricators across the country. However, deep in the heart of one of England’s traditional steel areas lies one that is somewhat different to the rest. Based in Scunthorpe, home for more than a century to one of the UK’s leading steel producing sites, the fabrication shops of Site Service Engineering offer not just high quality welding and fabrication but also some other specialist services.

Part of the Stocks Group, Site Service Engineering serves major clients in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, including Tata Steel and Balfour Beatty Engineering Services.

Marketing Manager, Joe Stoney explains, “Today, the Company is a leading structural engineering firm, offering custom fabrication services. We can provide a full range of structural engineering design services using our wide range of design packages and programs, CAD software and a design team that are fully skilled in all stages from planning through to the commissioning stages of construction. Our workshops are fully equipped so as to offer bespoke design, fabrication and installation of structural steelwork, pipework, plate and ductwork. These can be individual projects or can comprise buildings and process plant modules and we can produce work at up to 100 tonnes of structural steel per week.”

There is more to the Company’s offerings than this however. The workforce includes almost 200 skilled and experienced engineers. The Company prides itself on the range of specialist welding services that it offers, not just for structural steelwork but also for pipework. All welders are fully accredited for a variety of metals and to a range of national and international welding codes, including ASME viii & AMSE IX, A.O.T.C, BS 2971 – Class 1 +2, BS 5500, BS 2654, Lloyds Class 1 & 2, T.E.M.A., and PED. Welding processes on offer include, manual metal arc, MIG, TIG and brazing, while metals that can be welded range from the normal carbon steels, through stainless and duplex steels, Monel, titanium and aluminium.

Site Service Engineering is a recognised specialist in the installation of Tension Control Bolts (TCB). These are replacing conventional high strength friction grip bolts and swaged collar rivets simply because they are very quick and easy to install using lightweight electric shear wrenches. Guaranteed tension together with visual inspection assures engineers that connections are tightened in accordance with specifications.

The TCBs have many other advantages over conventional bolts in that they are less tiring on the operator, leading to better productivity and safer working, they have the strength of a 10.9 bolt with the ductility of an 8.8 bolt and, because they are manufactured from higher grade steel, this facilitates the use of smaller diameter bolts. They are increasingly used in highway bridges, overhead cranes, buildings, rail joints and high vibration machinery.
