Western Thermal completes three major Trace Heating contracts

Western Thermal, leading specialist engineers in thermal & acoustic insulation, ductwork, ventilation, trace heating, and fire stopping, with over thirty years’ experience, has completed three major trace heating projects at the Zig Zag Building in Victoria, London’s Victoria Station, and the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) building at Burghfield, Reading.
All three projects centered on Western Thermal’s frost protection service which provides constant hot water flow through pipes.

Michael Slater, Executive Operations Director of Western Thermal, said: “Over the years, frost protection through trace heating has become an important part of our overall thermal insulation business.
“These trace heating projects cover three key industries for Western Thermal, AWE being an important government contract through the Ministry of Defence, the Zig Zag building is a key residential and retail development, and Victoria Station is infrastructure project that has allowed us to contribute to public transportation needs,” said Mr Slater.

Two of the three recently completed projects also included other services from Western Thermal. Victoria Station also involved thermal insulation and leak detection works, whilst bespoke acoustic jackets were manufactured for installation within fans in Victoria Station’s plant room.

The Zig Zag building also involved thermal insulation and acoustic works, and was also Western Thermal’s largest fire-stopping project to date.

Western Thermal’s client for the Zig Zag building was Balfour Kilpatrick, with Lendlease being the main contractor. The company’s client for AWE and Victoria Station was NG Bailey, with Costain as the main contractor for AWE and TWBN as the main contractor for Victoria Station.

Western Thermal’s Trace Heating division specialises in providing water at a constant temperature through a building’s pipes and also protection from frost, which is now a commonplace function for thermal insulation solutions. It is an important and complex part of any given project and key to overall insulation packages. The Company’s trace heating systems include self-limiting heating cables, flexible resistant series heating cables, and metal-sheathed resistant series heating cables.

The division has contributed to numerous landmark projects including 8.5 kilometers of trace heating and frost protection at One Hyde Park, one of London’s most prestigious residential developments. More recently, the Company has delivered its trace heating and frost protection services at Royal Liverpool University Hospital, the Battersea Power Station development, and C610 Crossrail.
