Reinventing the Concept of Shopping

The Westside project, a new centre for leisure and shopping in Bern-Brünnen in Switzerland, is an urban scale architecture project totaling 1.5 million sq. ft. In addition to the 55 shops, 10 restaurants and bars, hotel, multiplex cinema, fun bath with wellness centre and housing, this mixed-use programme radically reinvents the concept of shopping, entertainment and living. Since opening in October 2008, Westside has welcomed a record number of visitors – 1.5 million in the first three months – and currently sees about 15,000-25,000 visitors per day. The Westside project is a joint venture between ADL and Burckhardt & Partner, Bern with Rhomberg Bau AG/Strabag AG and was completed in October 2008.

A Completely New Experience of Space

Like a crystal growing from rock, a dramatic structure emerges from the ground. The Villa, Daniel Libeskind’s first signature series home, creates a new dialogue between contemporary living and a completely new experience of space. Built from premium materials, this German-made, sculptural living space meets the highest standards in design, craftsmanship and sustainability. It is unique at every turn, offering maximum insulation and durability, cutting-edge technologies and compliance with some of the toughest energy-saving standards across the world. SDL worked with proportion GmbH on this project, with The Villa being available to discerning clients throughout the world.

Relationship with a Historical City

The theme of the Editoriale Bresciana Tower, which is set to be completed in 2010, is the reorganisation of an important part of the city of Brescia, an area between the historical centre and the new extension of the city towards the south.
